The Sawnee Mountain Kennel Club of Georgia, Inc., which is based in Cumming but covers five counties including Hall County, Forsyth, Dawson, Lumpkin and Pickens County, was established in 1988 as an all-breed A.K.C. dog club. The Sawnee Mountain Kennel Club is licensed by the American Kennel Club to hold pointed conformation and obedience events as well as Agility Trials. Our goals are to further the advancement of all breeds of purebred dogs, and to provide and promote canine education to the general community.

To achieve its goals our club has created and distributes canine information videos and education packets to area schools and libraries. We also encourage and hold Basic Obedience and Show Conformation handling classes, as well as Canine Good Citizen tests, all of which are open to the public.

Our project for 2001 was to provide bulletproof vests for all of the K-9 dogs in the counties that we serve. Two vests for Forsyth County, two vests for Lumpkin County, one vest for City of Jasper and one vest for Dawson County.

Our club holds monthly meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, at 7:30 PM at Decker’s Restaurant in Cumming, GA. Visitors are always invited. The restaurant is located on Highway 9 close to the Buford Dam and Highway 9 stoplight. We frequently have guest speakers who talk on a wide range of topics of interest to dog lovers.

Sawnee Mountain Kennel Club is involved with other kennel clubs in Georgia looking for property in the greater Atlanta area (within 60 miles of Atlanta) to build a Canine Events park. We need 50 - 100 acres so we can include not only conformation, obedience, and agility events but lure coursing, herding trials, tracking, field events, earthdog activities plus many, many more. If you have property available - either for sale or for a donation to a not-for-profit organization, please contact us. This is an exciting project and a direction for the future of dog fanciers everywhere.

For more information about the club, please call either Kate Larsen at 770-538-0149 or Kay Allred
          at 770-536-6360.
